*\u00bb65 million years ago, an asteroid just 10 km wide struck Earth and wiped out the dinosaurs. Today, without realizing it, we are launching our own asteroid: it doesn\u2019t come from space \u2014 we manufacture it day by day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every year we release 40 billion tons of CO\u2082. Compressed into solid form, that\u2019s a sphere 3.6 km in diameter. In 20 years, it will be an asteroid nearly 10 km across \u2014 the same size as Chicxulub, the one that erased the dinosaurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference is that this asteroid isn\u2019t falling from the sky. We are hurling it into our atmosphere ourselves, in fast motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we don\u2019t stop emissions and, beyond that, recapture what we\u2019ve already released, we will be the next dinosaurs: a brilliant species, extinguished by its own blindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is only one way out: to take the helm. This asteroid is not inevitable \u2014 we can dismantle it piece by piece. But the time is now, because we have already set it in motion.\u00bb*<\/p>\n\n\n\n
