Durante el per\u00edodo del mandato brit\u00e1nico en el subcontinente indio, estos grupos sociales fueron conocidos como clases deprimidas. En los textos modernos, las castas registradas son referidas a veces como dalits.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"\" align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n<p lang=\"\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Century Gothic, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Las castas registradas y las tribus registradas comprenden aproxidamente 16.6 % y 8.6 %, respectivamente, de la poblaci\u00f3n de la India (de acuerdo al censo de 2011 census). La constituci\u00f3n de la India enlista 1,108 castas en 29 estados y 744 tribus en 22 estados.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"\" align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n<p lang=\"\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Century Gothic, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Desde la independencia, a las castas registradas y tribus registradas les fueron otorgadas un estatus de reservaci\u00f3n, garantizando representaci\u00f3n pol\u00edtica.
