La planta crece de forma salvaje por todo el norte de la India, Pakist\u00e1n y el Himalaya (su origen putativo) y es un importante cultivo comercial para las gentes del lugar.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"\" align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n<p lang=\"\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Century Gothic, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Historia del charas<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Century Gothic, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">El charas ha sido usado en el subcontinente indio durante miles de a\u00f1os por sus propiedades medicinales y religiosas[cita requerida] y fue vendido en tiendas gubernamentales (junto con el opio) en los primeros tiempos del Imperio Brit\u00e1nico.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"\" align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n<p lang=\"\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Century Gothic, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">El charas desempe\u00f1a con frecuencia un importante e integral papel en la cultura y rituales del Hinduismo, especialmente entre los Shaivs -la subdivisi\u00f3n del Hinduismo que venera a Shiv\u00e1 como el dios supremo (a diferencia de los Vaishnavs que lo hacen con Vishn\u00fa) y es venerado como uno de los aspectos de Shiva.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"\" align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n<p lang=\"\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Century Gothic, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A pesar de su larga historia, el charas fue considerado ilegal en los a\u00f1os ochenta, surgiendo diversas sentencias draconianas al respecto. Incluso la mera posesi\u00f3n implicaba la condena a prisi\u00f3n durante diez a\u00f1os.
